Mellissa at Shakesville states that homophobia in men comes from the fear that homosexual men will treat them the same way that they treat women.

 As my wonderful professor once said “They’re afraid of the gaze (gays?).”

Seriously though, its really scary to think about how (some) men at least subconsiously understand that they don’t treat women well, but they don’t think to do anything about it. Patriarchy at its finest.

This is basically what I say any time I hear a man say something about how they find gay men ‘threatening’, how they should ‘keep it to themselves’. This tells me nothing about gay men. This tells me that you think having a sexual interest in somebody equates to being a threat towards them. This tells me you are a threat to every woman you look at, and you know it, and you think it’s normal.
